Artistry of Baby Cat Yarns

Master Dyer, Britta (Brit) Horsfall, started Baby Cat Yarns dye studio at the base of Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs, Colorado with one goal in mind: to custom dye yarn for your next project. It’s here that she melds her love of fiber arts with her deep obsession of the endlessness of the color wheel! And it’s where her own ‘Baby Cats’ – a goofy-eyed black cat named Ingrid, and an even goofier eyed brown kitten named Teo – keenly observe her art-based dyeing process at all hours of the day; their own personal string haven.

Brit was raised under a strong family art influence and she took that to Colorado State University where she graduated Summa Cum Laude and received her BFA as a double major in Painting and Fiber Arts. To this day, her eclectic portfolio features a combination of paintings, stitched work, woven pieces, soft sculptures, and drawings. Her work has been featured in art shows up and down the western states, as well as frequently published in local artisan magazines.

Horsfall has always been obsessed with color, process and fiber. She has spent years in the dyeing ecosystem, understanding the intricacies needed to produce beautiful, hyper-consistent, acid-dyed wool and protein fibers. She spent several years as lead dyer and studio manager for a well-respected indie dyer in northern Colorado and from there went to a cottage-sized wool mill outside of Steamboat Springs to learn more about the entire process surrounding the beautiful animals which supply the industry’s woolen yarn, as well as milling on heavy machinery the finest wools imaginable. Recently, Brit has been involved with various weaving commissions, private label yarn palettes, and custom knit works. From there she decided to go all-in and put her name behind a new brand in the yarn space. And that’s where Baby Cat Yarns was born.

When Brit does walk away from her dyeing vats at the end of each day, she hangs with Baby Cat, hits thrift stores, weaves on her (many) looms, knits like mad, grooves to vinyls and slips away to sip beer at local craft breweries – but she’s still always thinking about the next color of yarn she can conjure up! Brit will custom-dye pretty much any order you can throw her way and she strives to provide a joy-filled and personalized shopping experience to her customers in the fiber community that orbit around the magic of her living-color palettes she creates daily.
